Jacobsen, Antonio American 1850-1921) Oil on canvas, depicting the steamship, "Mississippi", signed and dated lower right: "A Jacobsen 1895". The vessel is beautifully painted with Jacobsen's typical excellent detail. The vessel has a black hull with the name, "Mississippi", painted near the bow. There are three orange and white painted deckhouses. The center deckhouse has a pilothouse, smokestack and lifeboats mounted to the top. There are four masts, the first three supporting sails. The water is beautifully painted in Jacobsen's typical style of this period. The sky which is mottled clouds is also painted in Jacobsen's typical style. The American flag is flying from the peak of the foremast, the American merchant flag from the second mast, the name banner from the third mast and the house flag from the fourth. The English flag is flying off the pole at the stern. (PA-613) Note 1: The "Mississippi" was built in Belfast in 1890 and owned by the Atlantic Transport Company of London. The vessel was 370 feet long, 44 feet in breadth and it drew 26 feet. Note 2: There is no other recorded example of a Jacobsen painting of the steamship, "Mississippi". Condition of painting: Please refer to written condition report. Condition of frame: The painting has a nineteenth century style fluted cove frame. The frame has a gold metal leaf surface.
